I Got a Lemon

This week a representative from the United States Department of Agriculture showed up unannounced at my door (and let me tell you, those people have power).

“I’ve come to seize your lemon trees.”

“My lemon trees??”

“Yes. We have reason to believe you purchased lemon trees online and I must confiscate them. You may not be aware that they were shipped illegally. Their state is on citrus quarantine.”

He was right. I was unaware.

The man loaded up my three trees and was on his way.

First the deer throw a dinner party in my garden, then the USDA takes my lemon trees.

All I can say is…

It was sad. But, I've been told I can get more, just as long as they don't come from a quarantined state!

What?? How did they find out you ordered lemon trees online? Do you have to 'report' to the USDA every time you plant things in your garden?

Actually we don't have to report things to the USDA. It just so happened that due to spreading citrus diseas, they are cracking down and quarantining certain states. Those states are not allowed to ship to where I live.

Those bureaucrats are so strange, really...
Like some kind of biorobots with rules programmed inside their brains (((

You have a point. If I put myself in their shoes, though, I do understand. They are trying to keep citrus disease from spreading and wiping out mass amounst of fruit trees - even if it means taking fruit trees from innocent bystanders!

I see. But why wouldn't they instead of confiscating lemon trees simply analyse probes of those trees for their health condition? There's high probability that trees were OK. And the problem is not about your fault for buying the trees online and though you mustn't have suffered this way. It was fault of selling company and those probes for condition and health of the trees could be on that company expanse. Certainly, if I've understood all this history well )

Aw, that's so sad. I loved those little guys. They were so cute. I'm sorry they were confiscated, but I'm glad you're getting some new ones!
