Writer's Block: Spreading the cheer

Do you decorate your home for the holidays? If so, when do you put your decorations up and when do you take them down?

I don’t do a whole lot of decorating for the holidays.

I know. That’s sounds terrible, but it’s the truth.

Sometimes, I just don’t get what all the decorating fuss is about.

The beauty of the season, for me, is not wrapped up in the lights and greenery. (Besides…massive amounts of decorating brings on a whole lot of work for one person when it’s time to put everything away – if you follow my drift).

But, lest you think I am a complete decorating killjoy all year round, let me show you my mantle.

I call this the “Mantle of 6 Kids Artwork plus Matt Redman”.

It is completely cluttered and overrun with stuff because that’s what happens when you have 6 kids and you don’t want to leave anyone’s precious art out.

Now, notice the piggy bank in the middle. There sits an officially autographed piggy bank by Matt Redman.

Matt Redman has been one of my absolute favorite artists for over a decade, so let me back up and tell you about how this bank came to be sitting on my mantle…

Earlier this year, “The Children’s Place” had a huge eBay auction of piggy banks autographed by famous musicians to support homeless children in my area. Matt Redman’s bank was one of them.

Half way into this auction, I noticed something strange. Most of the artists had a few bids. Matt Redman had none. I stared in disbelief.

I gathered two of my daughters (who each had their own eBay accounts) and said, “Girls, we can’t let Matt Redman go down in disgrace. We are going to make it our business to see to it that he gets more bids than any other artist out there (even more than Miley Cyrus ).

And that’s what we did. We kept up bidding each other by $1.00 over and over and over and over.

Matt Redman got the most bids.

He beat Miley Cyrus.

He deserved it.

I love your art works!! You have a lot of talent there!

I have a "Rapunzel tower" vase, an 'archer' in wire and plaster, a twig fairy, and a drawing of all my family as a tea set!! Heck, I still have a Christmas card I painted in high school (it won an honorable mention in a city-wide contest).

I love your story about Matt Redman!!

ok we need to remedy that situation. Bring something to put up there when you come. You can set it right next to the piggy bank.

Maybe I still have some stuff from high school around...I'll check the attic when I come.
